World Order Under Strain: Germany’s Merz Warns “Rules-Based System No Longer Exists”
At the annual Munich Security Conference, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz delivered a powerful and concerning message to world leaders: the global rules-based order, as we once knew it, is no longer functioning in its traditional form.
Speaking at one of the world’s most influential security gatherings, Merz warned that “our freedom is not guaranteed” in today’s era of aggressive power politics.
He stressed that Europe must prepare for difficult decisions and even “sacrifice” to defend its values and security.
A Deep Divide Between Europe and the US
Merz openly acknowledged that a serious rift has developed between Europe and the United States. He pointed out that tensions have increased over recent years, especially under President Donald Trump.

Merz made it clear that Europe does not share the “culture war” politics associated with the MAGA movement. He emphasized that Europe believes in free trade, constitutional values, and limits on speech that violate human dignity.

The conference comes at a time when America’s commitment to NATO has been questioned. For decades, many European nations have relied on the US nuclear umbrella for protection.
However, Merz revealed that confidential talks are ongoing with French President Emmanuel Macron about potentially strengthening a joint European nuclear deterrent. Currently, only France and the UK possess nuclear weapons in Europe.
Macron also addressed the conference, urging Europe to become a stronger geopolitical power. He described the Russia-Ukraine war as Europe’s “existential challenge” and warned against giving in to Russian demands.
